The Challenge Of Dating God’s Way In A World That Rejects God’s Authority

The greatest challenge for Christians today is having to live biblically within a culture that increasingly rejects the authority of Scripture. What God calls holiness, the world calls repression. What Scripture calls wisdom, the world calls foolishness. What the Bible calls purity, the world calls old-fashioned. What the Bible calls strength, the world calls weakness.

One of the areas of Christian living where this challenge manifests very seriously is dating. Everywhere we look, the world, through its propaganda machines—movies, social media, music, and pop culture—is telling us how to date, what “love” is, and what the “right person” should look like. In today’s culture, dating has increasingly become about feelings, attraction, trends, experimentation, and convenience rather than purpose, character, commitment, and covenant.

But as Christians, we belong to a different kingdom—the kingdom of God (Colossians 1:12–13). Thus, the worldly culture around us must not be the determiner of how we conduct our relationships. In fact, Scripture explicitly warns us against conforming to the culture of this sinful world. The apostle Paul exhorts:

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2, NLT)

The Bible—our supreme authority for beliefs and lifestyle—provides us with a different standard for love, sexuality, marriage, and relationships.

Therefore, confronting every young Christian is a critical matter: dating God’s way in a world that rejects God’s authority. This article examines this matter and proffers biblical truths and wisdom for how to do biblical dating in a world that rejects God’s authority.

The Timelessness of the Bible

Dating God's Way

The Bible contains the wisdom of the eternal God. While its books were written several thousands of years ago, the truths they reveal, like the God from whom they originated, remain timeless, speaking into every generation of humans. Technology has advanced. Social customs have changed. But the fundamental nature of humans has not changed, and neither has God’s standard of righteousness.

The Bible does not give us a modern dating manual with instructions about dating. Rather, it gives us something more valuable: eternal principles that govern the character, priorities, desires, boundaries, and purposes that should guide romantic relationships.

We must stop seeing God as opposed to romantic love. He created it and established its foundation in Genesis 2:24. Romantic affection is not inherently sinful. It is the good gift of God to us, to be enjoyed. What God opposes, and what He seeks to prevent, for which He gave us His Word, is the misuse of His good gifts.

Therefore, ignoring God’s wisdom in relationships is a recipe for disaster. When we reject the wisdom of the Creator, we expose ourselves to unnecessary wounds, confusion, temptation, and disappointment.

David states in Psalm 119:105 that God’s Word is a lamp intended to guide our feet and a light intendee to lighten our path. That includes the relationship path.

Biblical Dating vs. Worldly Dating

Dating God's Way

The biblical approach to dating differs fundamentally from the world’s approach. The world generally encourages people to ask, “What do I want?” But biblical wisdom teaches believers to ask, “What is the will of God for me as His child?”

Modern culture emphasizes attraction, chemistry, pleasure, and personal fulfillment in choosing a partner. But Scripture emphasizes character, holiness, wisdom, self-control, and God’s purposes.

Here are some important differences:

The world emphasizes outward attraction; Scripture emphasizes character. Beauty has its place, but Proverbs 31:30 reminds us that charm “is deceptive, and beauty does not last”. Only Godly character has lasting value.

The world says, “Follow your heart”. Scripture says, “Guard your heart” (Proverbs 4:23). Feelings are real, but feelings are not infallible guides.

The world treats sexual intimacy as a normal part of dating. Scripture reserves sexual intimacy for marriage, insisting on holiness in dating (1 Corinthians 6:18–20; Hebrews 13:4).

The world treats relationships as experiments. Scripture treats marriage as covenant. Biblical dating should has direction and purpose. It is never an endless cycle of adding and dropping.

The world prioritizes personal satisfaction. Biblical dating prioritizes God’s glory. Paul teaches that whatever we do, we should “do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

This does not mean that Christian dating must be joyless, rigid, or devoid of affection. It means that Christian freedom operates under the lordship of Christ.

Dating God’s Way

Dating God's Way

We come to a very crucial part where we consider biblical ways of dating. This is a necessary guidance for young Christians who are looking forward to entering into romantic relationships.

Choose From Among Believers

The first and most fundamental principle for Christian dating is that your choice must be from among fellow believers.

The apostle Paul gives a clear principle in 1 Corinthians 7:39: a believing widow is free to marry whom she wishes, “only in the Lord.” This principle is vital. Marriage is not merely a union between two personalities. It is a union that profoundly boils down to belief, worship, and alignment.

At the very depth of our being, every human is a believer in something and a worshipper of something—even atheists. It may be an ideology, a person, or even self. A Christian, therefore, must be mindful of who he or she is entering into marriage with. Do they share your faith in Christ and worship Him?

This is beyond choosing someone who attends church, uses Christian language, or is comfortable around Christians. The question is whether the person genuinely belongs to Christ and is committed to following Him.

Marriage involves shared convictions about faith, morality, family, money, sexuality, child-rearing, and the purpose of life. When two people are fundamentally divided in their allegiance to Christ, that division will eventually affect the marriage.

The principle of Amos 3:3—walking together in agreement—illustrates the importance of shared spiritual direction.

Be Purposeful

Dating should not become a hobby, emotional pastime, or recreational activity.

Christian dating should be approached with marriage as the intended destination. This does not mean that every dating relationship must end in marriage, but that relationships should be treated as sacred, not as a play thing.

Ask yourself:

Why do I want to date this person?

Am I genuinely considering marriage, or am I simply looking for companionship, attention, validation, or sexual gratification?

Will this relationship help me honor Christ?

Dating without purpose can create deep emotional attachments without corresponding commitment. It can also expose people to temptations that they are not equipped to handle.

Therefore, you should never rush into romantic relationships simply because everyone around you is dating. There is wisdom in waiting until one is mature enough—spiritually, emotionally, and practically—to seriously consider marriage.

Look Beyond Physical Attraction

Physical attraction is not wrong. It is natural and can be an important part of romantic love. But attraction alone is a poor foundation for Christian dating. A person may be physically attractive and still possess a destructive character.

When considering a potential spouse, look at the qualities that will matter when physical beauty fades and circumstances become difficult.

Does this person love and honor Christ indeed?

Are they truthful?

How do they treat the people around them, especially people who cannot benefit them?

What’s their attitude toward correction and accountability?

Do they demonstrate responsibility?

Do they demonstrate self-control?

Can they apologize?

Are they faithful to their words?

How do they handle money?

How do they respond when they do not get what they want?

These questions reveal character.

Christian dating should be an opportunity to discover character rather than merely an opportunity to satisfy attraction.

Pursue Purity

One of the greatest pressures facing Christian young people is sexual immorality.

Modern culture has normalized sexual intimacy in dating, but God’s standard is unchanging. Scripture calls believers to flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18) and to pursue holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:3–5). Marriage is honorable and the bed is to be undefiled (Hebrews 13:4).

Purity is not God depriving believers of pleasure. It is God protecting something He designed to be beautiful.

Sexual intimacy creates a bond that God intended for the marriage covenant. When that intimacy is separated from covenant commitment, people can experience emotional, spiritual, and relational wounds.

Therefore, in Christian dating, boundaries must be established. Your ultimate objective as a young Christian dating is to honor Christ with your relationship.

Guard Your Heart and Your Emotions

Emotional purity is as important as physical purity. Many times, people form deep attachment before determining whether someone is suitable for marriage. Excessive texting and private conversations, and intense romantic intimacy can create deep emotional attachment that makes objective discernment difficult.

Proverbs 4:23 warns:

“Keep your heart with all diligence…”

Guarding your heart does not mean becoming emotionless. It means refusing to allow emotions to outrun wisdom and discernment. Do not let loneliness make you feel that the first person who shows interest must be God’s will. Do not interpret every strong emotion as divine confirmation.

Feelings can accompany wisdom, but they should not replace wisdom.

Establish Healthy Boundaries

Christian dating requires practical wisdom. If you know that certain environments, conversations, times, or forms of physical affection consistently weaken your self-control, establish boundaries around them. This is not legalism. It is wisdom.

Romans 13:14 instructs believers not to make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lust. In other words, don’t place yourself in situations where temptation is likely to overpower you.

Healthy boundaries may involve avoiding prolonged isolation, inappropriate conversations, sexually provocative entertainment, or physical intimacy that continually leads toward temptation. The goal is not to avoid getting caught, but to cultivate holiness.

Be Accountable

Christian dating must never be done in secrecy. You do not need to surrender every private detail of your relationship to everyone, but biblical wisdom requires that you have trusted people who can provide oversight—parents, pastors, and mature believers.

These people can see things that you may miss, because you are consumed by affection. Scripture teaches that there is safety in having counselors (Proverbs 11:14).

Accountability can expose warning signs, correct foolish decisions, encourage purity, and help you maintain perspective. If someone insists that your relationship must remain completely hidden from godly authority, that should cause concern.

Grow Together Spiritually

A godly relationship should help you grow in your relationship with Christ, not weaken it. Dating should not cause you to abandon prayer, Scripture, church fellowship, Christian service, or spiritual fervency.

Ask yourself:

Am I becoming more like Christ through this relationship?

Is this person helping me pursue God?

Can we pray together and discuss Scripture honestly?

Can we encourage one another toward holiness?

If dating consistently pulls you away from Christ, that is a serious warning sign.

The person you marry will significantly influence your spiritual life. Therefore, pay attention to what the relationship is doing to your walk with God before you consider what it is doing to your emotions.

Pay Attention to Red Flags

Affection should never make you blind to character. Repeated dishonesty, manipulation, uncontrolled anger, sexual pressure, spiritual hypocrisy, disrespect, irresponsibility, possessiveness, jealousy, and refusal to accept correction should not be dismissed simply because you are “in love”.

Do not marry potential while ignoring present character. People can change, and God’s grace transforms lives. But marriage should not be entered on the assumption that you will be able to change the other person.

Let wisdom, prayer, counsel, and observable character guide your decision.

The Benefits of Dating God’s Way

Dating God's Way

The world may make biblical dating appear restrictive. It may tell you that you are missing out because you refuse to follow its standards. But obedience to God is never a loss.

Biblical dating:

Protects your heart from unnecessary wounds.

Protects your body from sexual sin and its consequences.

Builds relationships around trust, respect, and character.

Helps you identify genuine compatibility before marriage.

Preserves your dignity and honor.

Enables self-control and sacrificial love.

Prepares you for the responsibilities of marriage.

Helps you discern whether a relationship is truly moving toward God’s purposes.

Gives you a relationship that can be enjoyed with a clear conscience before God.

Sets you as a pattern for others to follow.

Most importantly, biblical dating teaches us to place Christ above romance.

The ultimate goal of Christian dating is not simply to find someone who makes us happy. It is to learn how to love another person while remaining faithful to Jesus Christ.

You Are Not Missing Out

One of the greatest lies contemporary culture tells Christians is that following the ways and the will of Christ means missing out. No, it does not! You are not missing out on anything.

You are not missing out because you refuse to sleep with someone before marriage.

You are not missing out because you refuse to enter a relationship merely because you are lonely.

You are not missing out because you reject the culture’s definition of love.

You are not missing out because you choose holiness over sexual experimentation.

You are not missing out because you insist on someone whose faith and character align with your commitment to Christ.

The world may laugh at our biblical convictions, but God’s approval is worth more than the applause of humans. Romans 12:2 commands us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. That command applies to Christian dating as much as it applies to every other area of Christian living.

Conclusion

We live in a culture that increasingly rejects the authority of Scripture. But the answer is not for Christians to abandon God’s standards in order to fit into the culture. The answer is to become even more firmly rooted in it.

God’s Word is not outdated because social customs have changed. God’s truth does not expire because society has developed new technologies or new definitions of relationships. The world changes. God’s Word abides forever (1 Peter 1:22–25).

Therefore, whether you are already dating or preparing to date, be courageous to choose God’s way.

Choose character over mere chemistry.

Choose purpose over casual experimentation.

Choose purity over sexual compromise.

Choose wisdom over impulse.

Choose accountability over secrecy.

Choose Christ over culture.

And remember: the goal is not merely to find the right person. The goal is to become the right kind of person while trusting God with the process.

God’s way may be countercultural, but it is never outdated. His wisdom leads to holiness, protects what He has entrusted to us, and prepares us to enter marriage with greater maturity, clarity, and honor.

If you belong to Christ, let your relationships testify that God’s Word is still sufficient for life in a world that has rejected it.
