Parenting through prayer is a crucial strategy for raising children in a time like this. To start with, parenting is one of the greatest privileges and most sacred responsibilities God entrusts to all Christian parents. The Bible says that children are a gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). But they are also a trust—given to us on trust by God, to care for and raise them on God’s behalf.
As Christian parents, we are called to nurture, guide, and train them in the way they should go so that when they are grown, they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Yet in our strength alone, we cannot give them all that they need, and ensure that they turn out well, even if we have been faithful in our duties. Being faithful in our children’s training alone does not guarantee that they will turn out well. A
fter all, they will grow up enough one day to leave our direct oversight. And, there are lots of bad influences in the world. That is why parenting through prayer must be a major part of our parenting strategy. Prayer must be the bedrock of Christian parenting.
Prayer is not only a spiritual discipline; it is also a lifeline. Prayer is the way we invite God into our children’s lives. It is the way we surrender them to God’s care and oversight. And, it is how we intercede for His purposes to be fulfilled in them. In a world full of distractions, dangers, and ungodly influences, parenting through prayer is a necessary strategy. Praying parents stand as watchmen over their children’s destiny.
In this article, I will examine 10 areas that parents must cover in prayer for their children, and also provide biblical guidance and sample prayer points.

Parenting through Prayer: Why It Really Matters
The word of God sets prayer as an indispensable part of Christian life and endeavors, which includes parenting. Philippians 4:6–7 says:
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
God wants us to involve Him in every aspect of our lives as Christians—instead of just worrying ourselves to death. Now, no area of our lives as parents worries us more than our children. I am a parent myself, and I know how much a parent can worry over their children. We worry over their academic performance, choice of career, friends, spouses, relationship with God, moral life, and everything. We want them to do well all round. Now, prayer is a vital means through which we involve God in our lives—including parenting.
Parenting without prayer is like trying to sail a boat without wind. We may steer the boat, but without the wind—God’s help, we cannot see meaningful progress. You see, while we can provide love, discipline, teaching, and guidance, only God can transform hearts, protect lives, and shape destinies. It is through prayer that we acknowledge our need for God as the ultimate Father of these children, and surrender them to His own works.
We have Job for an example. He regularly offered prayers and sacrifices on behalf of his children, saying, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” (Job 1:5). The Bible mentions that Job did that regularly.
Also, we have the example of Apostle Paul who ceaselessly prayed for the believers whom he led to faith in Christ—whom he often referred to as his children in the faith (1 Corinthians 4:15; Galatians 4:19).

Ephesians 1:15–17:
15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.”

Paul prayed for all his spiritual children everywhere. These examples show the importance of Christian parents standing in the gap through prayer for their children—whether it is biological children or spiritual children. All of us have this same responsibility, to plant seeds that God will water, shaping our children into the people He designed them to be, through prayer.
Parenting through Prayer: 10 Areas of Your Kids’ Life to Cover
There are 10 very important areas that Christian parents must cover in their prayer intercession for their children. I have also provided sample prayers and Bible texts.
1. Salvation and Spiritual Growth
The most important prayer that you can pray—and should pray, for your children is that they come to know Christ personally. Their souls matter to God greatly.
The Apostle Paul charges all believers to pray for all people—kings, government officials, and children— because it is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:1–4).
God wants our children to be saved, and to know Him. Nothing in life matters more. Once a child belongs to Jesus, everything else flows from that relationship. And, we must also pray for them to grow in their relationship with Christ (1 Peter 2:2).
Prayer Points:
- Lord, draw my children to Yourself and let them experience Your saving grace.
- Father, give my child a deep hunger for Your Word and joy in obeying it.
- Holy Spirit, teach my child to love prayer and desire Your presence daily.
2. Godly Character and Integrity
We must pray for our children’s character. This is important. We must travail in prayer until godly character— love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control—is formed in them (Galatians 5:22–24).
It is important that, as Christian parents, we have the vision of injecting children who will be blessings to humanity into the world, not children who will become addition to the world’s already complicated problems. We must both teach them godly character and integrity, and also pray godly character into them. In Galatians 4:19, Paul says:
“My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you.”
Prayer Points:
- Lord, shape the heart of my children to value honesty and truth (Proverbs 11:3; Proverbs 22:1).
- Father, let your Spirit develop every godly character in my children (Galatians 5:22–23).
- Lord, help my child to walk in purity, self-control, and gratitude.
3. Protection and Deliverance
The world is a dangerous place, filled with all kinds of evil people and dangers—physical harm, spiritual attacks, peer pressure, addictions, and wrong indoctrination. And, children are very easy prey for these things.
But praying Christian parents standing as shields over their children, invoking divine protection on their children (Psalm 91:11; 2 Thessalonians 3:3).

- Father, surround my child with Your angels and keep them from harm ().
- Lord, deliver my child from ungodly influences and bad company.
- Father, protect my child’s mind from fear, depression, and anxiety.

4. Wisdom and Guidance
It needs no saying that wisdom is essential for living. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” This is no less true for our children. Children face many decisions as they grow—about friends, academics, career paths, and marriage. They need God’s wisdom to navigate life successfully.
Therefore, we must pray for them for wisdom and guidance by God’s Spirit. James 1:5 tells us clearly that we can ask God for wisdom, and assures us that God gives it generously.
Prayer Points:
- Lord, grant my children wisdom to make godly decisions. Cause their hearts to always incline to your guidance (Proverbs 3:5–6).
- Father, give my children clarity of purpose and vision for their future.
- Lord, help my children to excel in knowledge and understanding.
5. Relationships and Social Life
Relationships is another crucial aspect of our children’s lives that we must cover in our prayers for the. Companionship have very serious impacts on people’s lives. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”
Relationships shape character and determine destiny. The wrong friends can derail a child from the right path, while the right ones can encourage growth in Christ (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Prayer Points:
- Lord, lead my children into friendships that will encourage their faith, and enrich their lives.”
- Father, help my children to walk in love, honor, and unity with family members and friends.
- Grant my children favor with teachers, mentors, and leaders.
6. Purpose and Destiny
Every human is created with a purpose. God said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations,” (Jeremiah 1:5). And, Ephesians 2:10 says:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Our children carry divine purposes. As Christian parents, we have the responsibility of praying that our children will not only discover God’s plans for their lives, but they will also fulfill them all.
Prayer Points:
- Lord, make my children’s calling to them, and guide them into it.
- Father, protect my children from distractions that hinder fulfillment of destiny.
- Make my children vessels of honor, useful for Your kingdom, to bring you glory all their lives.
7. Health and Well-being
Naturally, we want our children to be strong and healthy. But beyond medical care and strong hygiene, we can bring God’s supernatural covering over their bodies, minds, and emotions, through prayer.
Through prayer, we can activate a supernatural perimeter around them, so that no sickness or disease—whether through natural or spiritual causes, will be able to get to them (Psalm 41:3; 3 John 1:2).
Prayer Points:
- Father, keep my children healthy and sound in body, soul, and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
- Lord, preserve my children from sicknesses and diseases that deforms the body and mind.
- Grant my children peace and rest all their days.
8. Future Marriage and Family
This is one area of our children’s lives that we take the most lightly. We think that it is far away—particularly if they are still young. But truth is that it is never too early to start to pray for our children’s future spouse and family. Marriage has serious impacts on people’s lives. And, getting it right is one of the greatest successes that one can have in life.
Prayer Points:
- Oh Lord, let your mercy guide my children in the area of choosing who to marry (Proverbs 18:22). Guard and guide them jealously for the sake of Your name.
- Lord, lead my children to godly spouses in Your perfect time. May my children not suffer delays in getting married (Psalm 90:14).
- Father, give my children a Christ-centered marriage. Let their homes be filled with love, peace, and generational blessings (Psalm 127:1).
9. Emotional and Mental Strength
Life is full of pressure. And, our children will face pressures—at school, from peers, and self-doubt. If they are not strengthened mentally, they may give in to pressures and temptations. We must pray for them to be strengthened mentally.
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Prayer Points:
- Oh God, fill my children with peace and deliver them all their days from anxiety.
- Father, by your Spirit, bolster their confidence and resolve. Make them strong in their minds.
- Lord, let my children live in overflowing joy all their lives, no matter the circumstances they are in. Let them have the comfort and encouragement of the Spirit at all times.
10. Influence and Impact
Every Christian is set in the world to be an influencer. Our Lord calls us salt and light of the earth (Matthew 5:14). As salt and light, all children of God—including our children, are called to influence their world for Christ.
Therefore, we must pray for our children that they will walk in this honorable path all of their lives, and take the influence of the kingdom of God into all their spheres of existence. 1 Peter 2:9 says,
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
Prayer Points:
- Lord, let my children shine as light in their generation.
- Father, raise them as servant-leaders who model Christ.
- Make my child an instrument of revival and transformation.
Practical Tips for Praying as Parents
1. Pray Scripture Over Them—Declare God’s Word over them. We are not to pray our own words over our children. No matter how beautifully crafted, our words do not carry the same weight and power as God’s word.
2. Mention their Names in Prayer—Make it a practice to mention your children by name as you pray, affirming God’s promises over each of them.
3. Pray for them Consistently—Develop a routine—daily, weekly, or specific times of fasting and intercession.
4. Pray in their Hearings—Let your children hear you pray for them. Mention their names out loud so that they can hear you. That way, you are also teaching them how to pray for themselves. Then, every now and then, involve them in the prayers. Let them join you in fasting and praying.
5. Keep Prayer Journals—Write down your prayers, and also the testimonies of answered prayers. Someday, your children will find those journals, and see how you labored over them in prayer.
In conclusion, parenting through prayer is not a one-time act but a lifelong calling. It is a divine means to stand in the gap, shape destinies, and hand over your children to the One who loves them more than you ever could. While you may not always be there to protect, guide, or comfort them, God is always present.
When you make prayer the foundation of parenting, you secure your children’s future in God’s hands. As you pray faithfully, you will see His promises fulfilled: “The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be established before you” (Psalm 102:28).
Therefore, keep praying, parents. Your prayers are powerful, and they will echo through generations. Parenting through prayer is a lifelong journey, and every prayer you lift up is a seed planted into your child’s future. Don’t wait until challenges arise before you pray—begin today!
