Is Jesus the same as Isa? This is not just a question for apologetics— it is a question that concerns faith and assurance for those who believe in Jesus Christ. The Islamic faith, drawing its beliefs and doctrines from the Quran, presents a figure referred to as Isa—a prophet, as being the same person as the Jesus of the Bible.
If this was true—if the Isa of the Quran was truly the Jesus of the Bible, then it has critical implications for the faith of both Christians and Muslims, because it renders one of either faiths a lie. By this, I mean that either Christianity is true and Islam a lie, or Islam is true and Christianity a lie. But both cannot be true at the same time.
This dilemma stems from the manner in which the two religions present Jesus and Isa. While Islam and its adherents claim that the prophet Isa of their Quran is the Jesus of the Bible, the striking differences in the way the Quran portrays Isa and the way the Bible portrays Jesus make it impossible for the two figures to be one and the same person.
In this article, I am going to explore the biblical and quranic revelations of Jesus and Isa—their similarities and 7 striking differences, and draw a conclusion whether Isa and Jesus are truly one and the same person, or Isa is a distinct person who Islam is fraudulently passing off as Jesus.

Jesus vs. Isa
1. The Birth of Jesus and Isa
The Bible and the Quran agree on two things about the birth of Jesus and Isa:
- Their births were pre- announced by the angel Gabriel. Gabriel called Jesus the Son of God, Messiah, and King whose kingdom will have no end (Luke 1:26–33). But of Isa, he simply described him as a “pure son” and “Word from Allah” (Surah 3:45–47).
- Their supernatural conception. The Bible reveals that Jesus was conceived through the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:34–35; Matthew 1:18–20). And, the Quran reveals that Isa was conceived through Allah’s command and Spirit (Surah 19:16–21).
But after these two points, Jesus and Isa don’t have anything in common. From here, their differences are very clear.
- Jesus, according to the Bible, was born in a manger, in Bethlehem (Luke 2:4–7). But Isa’s birth took place under a palm tree according to the Quran (Surah 19:22–26).
- The mother of Jesus was Mary, of the lineage of David (Luke 1:27). But Maryam, Isa’s mother, was the “sister of Aaron”, daughter of ʿImran (Surah 3:35–36; 19:28). This is one of the proofs that the Quran is not infallible as Muslims claim. Mariam the daughter of Amram, the sister of Aaron and Moses, lived many generations before Mary the mother of Jesus (Exodus 6:18–20; Exodus 15:20), and so could never have been Isa’s mother.
- Isa began to speak clearly like an adult as a baby (Surah 3:49; Surah 5:110; Surah 19:27ff). But the Bible records no such thing about Jesus. Jesus grew up according to normal human growth.
2. The Identity of Jesus and Isa
The first most significant of the differences between Jesus and Isa. The Bible clearly identifies Jesus as:
- Son of God—who is fully divine, sharing of all of the divine attributes (Matthew 14:33; John 1:18; Romans 1:4).
- The Messiah—that is Savior (John 4:42; Philippians 3:20; Titus 1:4).
- Prophet (Acts 3:22-26; John 6:14; 7:40–44).
- High Priest (Hebrews 3:1; Hebrews 4:14–15).
- King (John 12:12–15; 1 Timothy 1:17; 1 Timothy 6:15).
But prophet Isa of the Quran was just a human, and a messenger of Allah. He is not divine (Surah 4:171).
3. The Nature of Jesus and Isa
The Bible reveals Jesus in the days of His flesh on earth as fully God and fully man; the two natures—the divine and human natures fully co-dwelled in Him without contradictions (John 1:1,14; Colossians 2:9).
But the Quran reveals Isa as just a human prophet, not divine (Surah 4:171).

4. The Miracles of Jesus and Isa
The Bible reveals that Jesus did countless miracles— healed the sick, raised the dead, cleansed lepers, opened the blind’s eyes, and forgave sins as one who has the power to do so, being God (Mark 2:5–12; John 11:43–44).
But while the Quran reveals that Isa also did miracles— healed, gave sight, and raised the dead—but he did them by Allah’s permission, not as one who has the power to do them in Himself being God.
5. The Crucifixion of Jesus and Isa
This is the second most striking difference between Jesus and Isa. The Bible reveals that Jesus was crucified, died, buried, and rose again on the third day (Mark 15–16; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
But prophet Isa of the Quran was not crucified— Allah only made it appear like he was crucified, or substituted him with another person who was then crucified, depending on which Hadiths you are reading. Isa was taken alive to heaven by Allah (Surah 4:157–158).
6. The Concept of Salvation with Jesus and Isa
The ultimate end to which Jesus suffered is to restore sinful humanity back to relationship with the Father. And, this, which is called salvation, happens by grace (as a free gift) through faith in Jesus’s death and resurrection (Ephesians 2:8–9; Acts 4:8–12).
But Isa is not a savior in Islamic tradition. In Islam, salvation is achieved through faith in Allah and personal good deeds.
7. The Return of Jesus and Isa at the End of Time
The Bible is unequivocal about the return of Jesus. He will return to judge the world and to set up His everlasting kingdom on earth (Matthew 24:30–31; Revelation 19:11–16).
Muslims are sharply divided over the return of Isa. A part argues that he will return before the final judgment to preach the message of Allah, kill all the pigs, destroy the cross, and get married. But another part argues that Isa is not coming back, because Muhammad was the last of the prophets. If Isa were to return, it would mean that he is greater than Muhammad. Both sides of this argument is anti-Bible, and do not reflect the true revelation of Jesus.
Is Jesus the Same as Isa?
So, is Jesus the same as Isa? I believe that the answer is obvious—no! Isa, if he truly ever existed, only shared a couple of similarities with Jesus—in the sense of their pre-birth angelic announcement and supernatural conception. But they differ drastically in too many respects—in their identity, nature, roles, and end.
According to biblical revelation, Jesus is God, and Lord and Savior, who died for humanity’s sins and rose again. But the Isa of the Quran was just a mere human, revered prophet who prepares people for Allah’s judgment. These differences go to the very heart of the Christian gospel.
Isa cannot be Jesus. Because that has great implications for Christian faith. Because Isa is quoted as saying things in the Quran, which the biblical Jesus never said—things which clearly negates the orthodox beliefs upon which Christianity stands. For example, Isa is quoted as saying that Allah is the true God, and that it is to Allah that he was showing humanity, and not to himself. Isa denied being divine, contrary to Jesus’s very clear claim of divinity. If you remove the deity of Jesus, then the entire Christian faith crashes. Even the crucifixion will lose its significance and values.
Again, Isa is quoted in the Quran as saying that another prophet was coming after him, who would be mightier than he. If Isa is truly Jesus, then all of us should be Muslims. Because that means that Jesus is not the final revelation of God to the world.
But many Christian scholars believe that Isa is just one huge invention of Muhammad to sell Islam as the final and divinely approved way to God. And, I agree with them. Jesus is not Isa. Think about it: Muhammad claimed to have received the revelation about Isa, who is supposed to be Jesus, from God through an angel. Then, why were even the basic details like his mother and birth place, gotten wrong from the facts that are historically known?
