You see, Christian life is built on faith—in who God is (His character), what He has said (His word), and what He can do (His power). Now, faith begins in the heart. When God wanted to bring us into His life, He imparted faith to our hearts so we can believe the gospel. Romans 10:10, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness…” But faith is not just a belief hidden in the heart—it is also a belief that is expressed through our words. Romans 10:8 says:
“But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach).”

What Does “Faith in Your Mouth” Mean?
Simply, faith in your mouth means speaking in alignment with the biblical revelation of God—His character, words, and power. It is not positive thinking or self-motivation. It is declaring the very words of God over your life. When you speak words of faith, you are not just making declarations—you are demonstrating your trust in God’s ability to fulfill His promises. Speaking words of faith is a proof of your belief. 2 Corinthians 4:13 says:
“And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak,”
Words reveal what occupies a person’s heart—whether unbelief or faith (cf. Matthew 12:33-35). A person in whom faith dwells speaks words laced with belief in who God is, what He has said, and what He can do. You cannot believe in God’s character, words, and power, and not make your boast in them. Speech is a proof of conviction. Genuine belief in God’s good character, reliable words, and mighty power always moves the believer to boast about God.
The True Proof of Belief
Anyone can speak well about God in good times—but only people of faith boast of God in distress. The event of Daniel 3:8-18 is a case study. Both God and satan show interest in our distress. The two use our distress to achieve something. Satan tries to exploit our distress to kill our belief in God by altering our perception of Him. When he attacks us—our health, finances, or career—his actual target is our faith. Jesus told Peter that satan wanted to sift him, but He prayed for him that his faith shouldn’t fail (Luke 22:31–32). The devil was after Peter’s faith.
Perception births convictions, and conviction births confession. If our perception of God can be altered, then our convictions and our confession of Him can be altered. In distress, satan tries to alter our view of God by making us question His character, words, and power: “If God is truly good, then why did He allow this?” “If God is truly powerful, then why can’t He stop this?”
But this truth must settle in us: our situations—good or not—do not make true or untrue who God is, what He has said, and what He can do. God’s character, word, and power remain true, regardless of our situation. What we must do is to train ourselves to speak, not according to our situation, but the Bible’s revelation of God. This is the true proof of belief.
Speaking As Proof of Trust in God’s Ability
One of our trainings as believers is to speak rightly—according to the revelation of God through His word. Faith doesn’t live in denial. Faith doesn’t deny facts. Faith only does not exalt facts above the truth of God revealed in His word. Faith speaks according to the revelations of God in the face of the scary facts. Faith keeps affirming, through belief in the heart and words of the mouth, the goodness of God and His mighty power to deal with the situations.
When you declare God’s Word over your situations, you are essentially saying, “I trust who God is, what He has said, and what He can do, more than my situations.” For example:
- If you say, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1), you are declaring your trust in His generosity and riches to meet a need in your life.
- If you confess, “By His stripes I have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24), you are showing faith in Jesus’s finished cross works for your healing.
- If you declare, “And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19), you are expressing confidence in His ability to sustain you.
You see, your confession is visible evidence—proof—that you do not rate your distressing situation above God’s ability and words.
Why Faith Must Be Spoken
Faith starts from and dwells in the heart, but it must be expressed constantly with the mouth. Romans 10:10 says, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Speaking words of faith matters because:
- Words confirm your belief: what you say betrays what you truly believe in your heart. There is a strong connection between your heart and your mouth (Matthew 12:33-35).
- Words activate God’s promises: Faith-filled activates God’s promises by aligning your spoken words with God’s written words. It reinforces faith and rightly positions you to receive what God has already made available.
- Words shape your reality: Proverbs 18:21 teaches that life and death are in the power of the tongue. Speaking faith sets the course of your life. It shapes your attitudes, emotions, and actions, thereby influencing the outcomes you experience in your life.
- Renews Your Mind: Speaking God’s words over your life works for renewal of your mind, replacing negative or fearful thoughts with God’s promises and truth.
- It moves you from information to revelation: the more you speak God’s words over your situation, the word of God becomes more real to you. You move into the experiential dimension of the Word.

Here are some practical ways that you can follow:
- Confess Scripture Over Your Life
Choose specific Bible verses that apply to your situation and speak them out loud. You can either memorize them or write them out on papers or cards.
- Guard Against Negative Speech
Avoid words of doubt and fear. If your confession contradicts God’s Word, it weakens your faith.
- Pray with Bold Declarations
Instead of just asking, conclude your prayers with affirmations like: “Father, I believe it is done according to Your Word.”
- Encourage Others with Faith Talk
Uplift those around you by speaking life, hope, and truth into their situations.
